Victorian State Cheerleaders
Cheerleading was introduced to the Jazz Centre program in 1999 as an extension of the Acrobatic program where students could incorporate their dance training with their acrobatic skills. Our cheerleaders have made regular appearances for Melbourne Storm, Netball Victoria, the Opening of the Deaflympics Games and numerous other events. Over the years our squads have been at the forefront of competitive cheerleading in Victoria receiving numerous awards.
Our program incorporates all elements of cheerleading including poms, motions, jumps, stunts, tosses, tumbling, dance, cheer, strength and conditioning required by the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation. The Victorian State Cheerleaders compete in two to three local competitions throughout the year with competitions being generally held at the beginning of the June/July and September school holidays. Elite squads may also compete in Nationals, which are held in a different state each year. All cheerleaders are charged an annual fee of $15, which covers Insurance and Membership for the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASCF). This Insurance also covers the cheerleaders for their classes, camp or any other performance they may be involved in.
Squads
Students must take the tumbling/acrobatic class if they wish to be part of the All Star Cheer squad. The higher the level of the squad the more extensive tumbling is required. Extra rehearsals are often required prior to competition. Squads can compete in pee wees 6 yrs & under, Mini cheer level 1, 8 yrs & under, Junior cheer level 1, 11 yrs & under, Youth cheer & pom level 1 & 2, 14 yrs & under and Teens level 3, 18 yrs & under depending on their skills level.
Uniform
All cheerleaders are required to purchase uniform and correct cheerleading shoes if they intend to compete. Shorts and t-shirt can be worn for practise sessions available from the Jazz Centre. We also have a 2nd hand sale at the beginning of the year where uniforms and shoes may be purchased for a very reasonable price.
Cheer Camp
Over the years our cheerleaders have attended cheerleading camps at Phillip Island Adventure Resort either at the end of term1 or beginning of term 2. Workshops are held over two days working on team building skills, stunts, tumbling and routines. The camp always proves to be a valuable weekend full of hard work mixed together with fun and bonding amongst teams and team members.
Try Outs & Assessments
At VSC we are always interested in any new talent to join our cheerleading squads. Try outs are generally held in January when new squads are being formed but arrangements can be made throughout the year for any newcomers. All cheerleaders are assessed at the end of term 2 and 4 to determine whether they are ready to be considered for a higher level squad.
